In Magic: The Gathering (MTG), that space is a specific zone outside of the main playing area where the commander of a deck is placed. The concept of the Command Zone is particularly relevant in the Commander format, a popular multiplayer variant.
In EDH Commander, each player builds a 100-card deck centered around a legendary creature known as the commander. They start the game in the Command Zone and can be cast from there like any other spell, but if it would be put into a graveyard or be exiled, the player has the option to return it to the Command Zone instead. Each time a player wishes to cast their commander from the Command Zone, its casting cost increases by an additional 2 colorless mana for each time it has been cast from it during the same game.
